My Cupcake Obsession…Gigi’s & Silver Lining

I am suspicious of anyone who says they don’t like cupcakes or cake for that matter. Because who doesn’t love cake? If you are one of those people, let’s talk and I’ll make a convert out of you.

Just call me the cupcake monster.

The cupcake trend peaked in popularity in the mid to late 2000’s, with the popularity of Sprinkles Cupcakes, Magnolia Bakery, and Crumbs in NYC. Athens has finally embraced the trend and has two new cupcake shops in the vicinity, Silver Lining Cupcake Co. and Gigi’s Cupcakes.

Gigi’s is a chain cupcake shop that specializes in unique flavors such as Margarita and Cherry Limeade. As great as the flavors are, Gigi’s does not skimp on the decoration. These cupcakes are meant to wow, and little details go a long way in the presentation of the cake. Nevermind, these bad boys cost $3 a piece. Half of the price is for the presentation alone, plus the cute box they put the cake in. Marketing ploy or not, I eat it up.

I tried the Banana Split cupcake because I couldn’t decide what flavor cake I wanted, and then I couldn’t decide what flavor icing I wanted to try. Therefore, the store associate picked out this flavor for me, which gave me a strawberry cake base with marshmallow fluff inside, banana frosting and chocolate ganache topping. These cupcakes are larger than average, with half of its weight coming from the immense amount of frosting they top each cake. I’m a frosting girl, so the more the better. However, the strawberry cake was good on its own, and the banana icing was absolutely divine. I cannot wait to go back and try their Lemon Icebox flavor.

Recently at a party, I tried the Pink Champagne cupcake from Silver Lining Cupcake Co. The cake was baby pink with pink icing and covered with decorative silver sprinkles. The cake base and frosting were both good. Other flavors included Cookie Dough, Red Velvet and Vanilla Twilight.

The pictures don’t do the cupcakes justice. But take a look, you’ll be like a Pavlov dog in no time.
